I am so very cheap frugal. I do not like paying for something I can make on my own. Seriously….I do not want to pay $2-3 dollars for something that only costs pennies to make.
Yes, I know…making something from scratch takes a little time. BUT, what if you can make it while you are making dinner and save yourself some money?
That’s what I thought – make it!
Making bread crumbs is easy.
Step 1: slice some bread (really thin). If you bake your own bread, this is necessary. If you do not, you can still use your store-bought bread…. Either way, place the bread on a pan in the oven: 200
Leave the bread in there for approximately 30 minutes (or until it is ‘dry’ and crumbles very easily)
Step 2: Take the bread out, crumble it and use a kitchen accessory if necessary to crumble them as small as you want them. I use my Cuisinart Smart Stick Hand Blender. If you want to add herbs/spices – this is when you want to do it. I will add a little – depending on what I am using the bread crumbs for (usually, it’s my meat loaf and I do not add anything then).
That’s it. You now have yummy, easy and cheap frugal bread crumbs.
Use what you need and store the rest in a glass jar!

Caramel Apple Dessert looks and sounds like a yummy recipe. I want to try this. Our family uses the crockpot a lot. ,Did you mean layer on the DRY cake mix, or follow cake mix instructions and pour over caramel and apple pie filling?
Betty Jo, for the Caramel Apple dessert, I just sprinkle the dry cake mix over the apples and caramel – thanks for asking the question – I will update the post with that information.
Thanks! Will try it for our homeschool group fall festival.
