When our daughter began learning to read, it was apparent she was a struggling reader. Over the past three years, we have been working on phonics and reading programs to help her with this. Through our journey, we have noticed that she struggle with maintaining focus on words while reading. The idea to try overlays and reading rulers really came to mind when I discovered her reading a book on our Kindle. She had highlighted all of the words in yellow. When I saw this, I sat down and we discussed why she highlighted the words. She explained during this discussion that the words were easier to read.
She and our youngest son began using both products. My son enjoys the rulers. They are easier for him to use with his books and help him stay on the right line while he is reading.
I have noticed an improvement in her reading while using these. She is able to stay on track, focus and is less frustrated when she reads. In addition to being less frustrated, she is now asking to read and is enjoying it more.
If you have a child who can read, but struggles with focusing or perhaps has dyslexia or other reading problems, I recommend trying rulers or overlays. It may be that the colors help the words pop off the page for your child.
